- Loox 720 Review (05:54) - Tomer Eisner has reviewed the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720 over at handystore.co.il: "This little story goes a long way to explain how good and impressive this new product developed by Siemens in Germany and manufactured in the east really is. True, I did find some few imperfections that I would have liked fixed, but the bottom line is that this is a true winner, the kind that every PDA buff would like to own. If you asked a Pocket PC or Palm user to describe what features they would like to have – these probably all exist in the FS720. In short, I highly recommend. This is by far one of the best devices to have reached the market and it will surely go on to conquer a serious market share." You can check out Tomer's full review in both English and Hebrew....

- Loox 720 Review (17:37) - Doug Rayburn has reviewed the Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720 over at PocketPCThoughts: "The hardware side of Pocket PCs has been pretty quiet over the past year or so, and new models being introduced had very similar features in a given price range. But the hardware has gotten exciting again with the recent release of several new models from various manufacturers that feature screens with VGA resolution. Compared to the heavily promoted models from HP and Dell, the Loox 720 from Fujitsu Siemens is pretty much flying under the radar. Much of that is due to the fact that it’s not being marketed in the US or Canada. However, the 720 is widely available all over Europe in several languages, including German, French and Spanish, and it can be purchased from several vendors in the UK if you’re interested in an English language version." - Dell Axim X50 Battery Tests (17:32) - PocketPCThoughts ran some battery tests on their X50 to see if the battery life is as poor as some people have been saying. Their full results are linked below, but basically they got 2hrs 10mins of active Wi-Fi use, 3hrs 38mins of standard non Wi-Fi use, and almost 9hrs of listening to MP3. In their article they compare these results to the regular X50 and their X30 high. (PocketPCThoughts Article)...

- Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 (06:05) - Ok, so it runs linux instead of windows software but it is VGA and sorobangeeks got some photos of the new Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000. The Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 is a nice looking PDA that could only be improved if it had WiFi and was available here in the US. The SL-C3000 has a great flip-top design with a QWERTY keyboard, runs linux, has a 416mhz xscale processor, 3.7" VGA screen, SD/MMC card slot, USB connectivity and a 4GB hard drive. Battery life of the Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 is said to be 7 hrs, it is 4.9" by 3.5" by 1" and it weighs 10.5oz. (photos from sorobangeeks)...

- HP iPAQ hx4700 review (06:14) - "VGA? No doubt about it, VGA is cool. However, the experience is not perfect - yet. " Geekzone takes a detailed look at the HP iPAQ hx4700 series VGA Pocket PC. They try to focus on features that aren't always detailed in other reviews such as bluetooth with phones and headsets, business software, security, and the touchpad. Their verdict: "If you have read my blog, you will know that I don’t regard VGA alone as enough reason to buy a new VGA Pocket PC. However, this device is very cool and I’m probably going to get one. The reason I like this device is the combination of Bluetooth Audio (this is a killer for me – I hate cables), strong security, good screen and loads of memory." Geekzone review...

- HP iPAQ hx4700 128mb memory upgrade (18:23) - PocketPCTechs have announced they now offer memory upgrades for the VGA HP iPAQ hx4700 series (hx4700 and hx4705). The upgrade gives you 128mb of RAM but is quite expensive at $199 and invalidates your warranty. That said, PocketPCTechs do give a 90 warranty on their work and they have a great reputation for quality upgrades. HP iPAQ hx4700 Series 64MB to 128MB Internal RAM Upgrade (via PocketPCThoughts)...
- So near but yet so far (18:07) - I was at the Digital Life show in NY today (at the Javits Center, today was press day, it is open to the public Oct 15th-18th). At the Microsoft stand guess what I spy in a case along with all the hot new MP3 players? yep, a Dell Axim x50v. Alas, there were too many security guards around. The Microsoft staff offered to take it out of the glass case so I could get a closer look but I declined the offer.... the temptation would be too much and I don't want to spend 5 to 10 in sing-sing. There were lots of other interesting gadgets there, all of which I had heard of, but it was nice to hold them in my grubby little hands. Check out shinyplastic.com where I have a load of news articles and pictures from the show....

- 802.11a/b/g on one chip (04:43) - Atheros has introduced the first Single-Chip 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Solution. What this means for Pocket PCs and other gadgets is that it may soom be possible to have a low power wireless solution that supports more than just 802.11b. A lot of large companies have 802.11a networks, and a lot of people are replacing their 802.11b networks with faster 802.11g networks: having an 802.11b device on a 802.11g hetwork slows it down for everyone, so 802.11a/b/g gadgets will definately be popular. Of course, once this is in devices we will all be clamoring for 802.11n connectivity, then it will be WiMax, then the next wireless standard etc....... Press Release (via PDAGeek)...
- Pocket PC Processor Technology (04:32) - PocketPCThoughts linked to an interesting article from Intel covering the history and specifications of Pocket PC Processors. - PocketNow Reviews the Dell Axim X50v / X50 (15:56) - PocketNow has a review up of the Dell Axim X50 and X50v VGA Pocket PCs. Their extremely visual review can be found at http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=495. Some quotes: "Note how the Axim X50 packs in more than most other Pocket PCs, and gets away with a smaller footprint." "The 3D performance of the X50v is unprecedented. I applaud Dell on not only stepping out on a limb and raising the bar for video on Pocket PCs, but for also included two games that actually take advantage of it." "The 1100 mAh Lithium-Ion battery is an improvement from previous Axims like the X30, but still remains a bit anemic."...
- Brighthand Reviews the Dell Axim X50v (15:43) - Brighthand has their review up at http://www.brighthand.com/article/Dell_Axim_X50v_Review?site=PPC. While not as detailed as some of the others it is still an interesting read. "If there's one thing Dell does well, it's give you a lot of bang for your buck. The X50v is $499, a whopping $150 less than the iPAQ hx4700. As I mentioned before, the X50v has a smaller screen that its chief competitor, and the iPAQ has some additional features, like a trackpad, flipcover, and larger battery. But anyone thinking about a VGA Pocket PC must think hard about the X50v. It's a solid device and an excellent value."...
- Cnet Reviews the Dell Axim X50v (15:36) - CNet have their review of the Dell Axim X50v up, and they are not as nice to Dell as some of the other reviewers. Cnet's review can be found at http://reviews.cnet.com/Dell_Axim_X50v/4505-3127_7-31138229.html?tag=cnetfd.sd. CNet only gave the X50v 7.6 out of 10 (higher than the 7.0 they gave the Asus A730, but lower than 7.9 for the hx4700, 7.7 for the e800, or the 8+ they regularly give Sony's failed Clies), do CNet dislike all Pocket PCs or is it just Dell? Here are their comments: "The good: Large VGA screen; great graphics; included gaming bundle; Windows Media Player 10.0 Mobile; fast processor and ample memory; integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; sleek design; user-replaceable battery. The bad: Heavy; small navigation toggle; lackluster software bundle; so-so battery life and video performance."...
- BargainPDA Reviews Dell Axim X50 / X50v (15:28) - BargainPDA's turn for a review. Their review is available at http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=2258&review=Dell+Axim+X50. Summary: "Though it lacks some of the appealing characteristics of its predecessors, the X50 offers a host of all new reasons to like it. At first, I didn't think that I was going to be terribly impressed with the Basic and Advanced X50s, but now in some ways I'm as impressed with them as I am with the X50v. The low end X50 is essentially an iPaq 2215 with more style. The mid-range is an iPaq 4150 with dual-slots. Dell has managed to create competitors for two of the most popular models of PocketPC in one fell swoop, and on top of that imbue them with a new operating system, faster processors, and larger batteries. And as the final clincher, the high-end unit is pretty close to the Holy Grail of the current PocketPC world: a small, fast...
- PocketPCThoughts Reviews Dell Axim X50 (15:15) - PocketPCThoughts comes in 3rd with a review, this time just of the X50 mid.... their X50v was held up due to Canada's Thanksgiving Day holiday yesterday. Their review can be found at http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,33206. Here is their summary: The mid-range Dell Axim X50 is a well balanced Pocket PC that delivers a strong set of features (including WiFi and Bluetooth) at a reasonable price. The styling isn't anything to write home about, and while it's bigger than the iPAQ 4150, having dual slots is a huge benefit for some people so the size bump may be worth it. And you can't argue with the price!...
- Extreme Makeover For Dell Axim Results In Svelte Look And High Performance (15:14) - ROUND ROCK, Texas, Oct 12, 2004—Dell today unveiled three new Axim™ handheld computers that combine the latest PDA technology in a svelte dual-slot design. - Aximsite Reviews Dell Axim X50 / X50v (15:02) - Coming a close 2nd in getting their review up is Aximsite who has seperate reviews of the Axim X50 mid and X50v models: The Aximsite reviews are at: http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=53873. One notable point is that the X50v was slower than the hx4700 in video playback using betaplayer. Expect a new version of Betaplayer that takes advantage of the X50v graphics chip to even that score. They also note that the screen brightness is not as good as the hx4700. I noticed earlier that the X50v only has 80 nits brightness compared to 100 nits on the QVGA X50 and X30. Another area of concern was the low battery life they experienced, just 2 hrs with max backlight and wi-fi. I expect good sales for Mugen when they come out with an aftermarket extended battery....

- PDAGeek Reviews Dell Axim X50 / X50v (14:38) - PDAGeek wins the "who can get their X50 review up quickest" award. Their review of the X50 and X50v can be found at http://www.geek.com/hwswrev/pda/aximx50s/index.htm. Its a detailed review with lots of pictures, screenshots, and comparisons of the differences between the VGA and QVGA models. Here are their conclusions: "I think Dell hit the ball out of the park with these new X50 machines due to the inclusion of dual wireless functionality, dual expansion slots, fast processors, and ample memory--all in an extremely comfortable and classy form factor. It is amazing to see what Dell was able to pack into a device like the X50v and still price it at $499. At $150 less than the iPAQ hx4700, Dell is definitely serious about the Windows Mobile market. With the X50 running at $399 I don't see how palmOne can compete, since the T5 lacks Wi-Fi and a second expansion slot....
- X50 and X50v Reviews Coming (11:11) - PocketPCThoughts got an X50 and PDAGeek got an X50v to play with. Both should be posting reviews later today once Dell's embargo is lifted (11am PST, 2pm EST). We will link to the reviews as soon as they are up. (hmm, no X50 in my mailbox.... Dell is definately off my Christmas list :)...

- Dell Axim X50 / X50v Manual (07:29) - The official manual for the Dell Axim X50v and X50 has now shown up on the Dell support website: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/aximx50/en/index.htm Page 17 of the manual has a good diagram showing the location of all the various buttons (copied below). Definately no jog dial on this VGA Pocket PC :( The battery cover is an interesting idea, I wonder how more complicated it will make things for Mugen and others who want to make after-market extended batteries. On page 28 it talks about a VGA cable accessory that lets you connect the X50v to a projector. Getting down into the detailed specs it looks like the VGA isn't a bright as the QVGA screen: 80nits vs 100nits (for comparison the X30 is 100 nits, the iPAQ h5400 is 75nits). (via Aximsite forums)...
- Dell Axim X50 / X50v Spec Sheet (06:08) - The Dell Axim X50 and X50v are supposed to be released later today and PocketFactory got hold of the official spec sheet in PDF format. No big surprises, it looks exactly like the pictures we already had, and the specs are the same as we had told you in our Dell Axim X50 profile. The only changes to the profile are the confirmation of only 64MB RAM (some people were saying 128MB) and the confirmation of the weight at 6.2oz. The Axim X50v is a great Pocket PC and I will be ordering one ASAP to review, only negatives are the lowish RAM (although with 1gb 80x speed CF cards close to $100 these days storage space shouldn't be an issue), and the lack of a jog dial like on the X30. Dell Axim X50v PDF Datasheet (right click to save to your computer) (via PocketFactory, thanks Serge!)...

- Dell Axim X50 Another Photo (07:14) - Someone posted a photo over on the Aximsite forums that appears to show a Dell Axim X50 in the flesh, powered up, with (for a reason I can't fathom) a Japanese schoolgirl on the screen. Lots of buzz going around that the X50 might be announced today or tomorrow and that ordering will start on Tuesday (October 12th). The VGA Version (Dell Axim X50v) has a 624MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, removable 1100mAh battery, 802.11b, bluetooth, Type II CF slot, SDIO/MMC/SD and slot. Dimensions of the Dell Axim X50v are 4.7" x 2.9" x 0.6" and weight is said to be a low 4.9oz. This is probably going to be the best VGA pocket pc around when it comes out: only minuses appear to be basic infrared not the fast consumer kind, and not operating as a USB hub. Check out our VGA Pocket PC Comparison to see...

- iPAQ 4700 First Impressions (11:08) - BargainPDA got hold of the HP iPAQ 4700 yesterday and have already posted their first impressions of the new VGA Pocket PC device. So far their review looks at the build of the iPAQ 4700, and details what they think of the VGA screen: "The difference between QVGA and VGA is like the difference between penciled sketches and Van Gogh's Starry Night. VGA is so crisp, it makes the real world look fuzzy." A full review will follow soon. (BargainPDA iPAQ 4700 first impressions)...

- No VGA for iPAQ hx2000 Series (09:02) - PDAgold found more info on the exact specifications of the hx2000 series of Pocket PCs from HP: no VGA resolution on any of them. HP is copying Dell by offering 3 different versions of the hx2000: the low-end hx2110, the mid-range hx2410 and the high end hx2750. The basic hx2110 features a 312MHz XScale processor, 64MB RAM and 64MB ROM (total 88MB user accessible), Bluetooth 1.1, SDIO and CompactFlash card slots and a 920mAh removable battery. The hx2410 is the same as the hx2110 except for a faster 520MHz processor, Wi-Fi 802.11b, and larger 1440mAh battery. The hx2750 adds a 620MHz processor, 128MB RAM and 128MB ROM (total 214MB user accessible), and a biometric fingerprint reader. All 3 are 4.7" x 3.0" x 0.6" and weigh 5.8oz. All 3 are missing VGA resolution screens and consumer speed/range infrared, making these much more suited for the business user than the...

- Toshiba e830 Available in Canada (05:50) - The Toshiba e830 VGA Pocket PC is now available in Canada. This is the best way to buy it if you are in the US as there are no plans to release it here. The Toshiba e830 features 520MHz processor, 128MB RAM 64MB ROM, 4" VGA screen. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, CompactFlash, and Secure Digital card slots. (full profile) You can buy the Toshiba e830 from Handheld Canada for $667 + tax (canadian dollars). - HP iPAQ hx4700 / hx4705 Review (05:38) - Chris Leckness at ipaqhq reviewed the HP iPAQ hx4700 VGA Pocket PC. Here are some quotes from the review: "Was it worth the wait to me? Yes. While its not likely to become my everyday PDA, it is packed with some great features and has a marvelous screen." "If want VGA and prefer HP, this is the model for you. If you are a budget PPC'er, this is not for you. I am trying not to call it an overpriced gadget, but it is hard knowing pricing on other VGA models." Full review...

- Fingerprint Sensing LCD Screen (10:05) - Casio has developed a 1.2" LCD screen with a fingerprint sensor layered into it. The idea behind the concept is to built biometric security into cellphones without needing a seperate sensor. Casio said it could also be used in PDAs (but that would require a larger, higher resolution, and hopefully VGA resolution, LCD). Sounds nice but what I don't get is: why would I want a PDA or cellphone whose LCD screen is always covered in greasy dirty fingerprints? (more from PC World)...

- HP iPAQ hx2000 Pictures (06:53) - Engadget got sent some pictures of the rumored HP iPAQ hx2000 series of Pocket PCs. These aren't VGA pocket PCs although there is a slight change HP may do a Dell and make the high end hx2700 VGA. Word is there will be 3 models: the hx2100, the hx2400, and the hx2700. The HP iPAQ hx2100 will have a 316MHz XScale processor, 2.5" display, 64MB RAM, 64MB ROM, CompactFlash, Secure Digital, and Bluetooth. The HP iPAQ hx2100 will have a 624MHz XScale processor, 2.5" display, 128MB RAM, 64MB ROM, CompactFlash, Secure Digital, 802.11b, and Bluetooth. There are no specs on the hx2400 but we expect it to have a 520MHz processor, 128MB RAM, and no Wi-Fi. No info on release date or price: our guess on prices would be $300, $400, and $500 for the 3 models. Engadget has some more pics including a clip-on keyboard. (via engadget)...
- Adobe Reader for Pocket PC 2.0 (06:27) - Adobe has released a new version of their Acrobat Reader software for Pocket PC. I need to view a lot of acrobat PDF files but it's never been easy on a Pocket PC due to the low resolution. I was excited therefore to hear about this update to Adobe's software and was looking forward to VGA resolution for my PDF files. Here's the kicker: the new version of Adobe Reader doesn't support VGA resolution. Does anyone at Adobe keep up to date with technology?, does anyone at Adobe even own a Pocket PC? I can understand many games not supporting VGA as it's very difficult to make the graphics work for both QVGA and VGA, but Adobe Reader is a business application whose reason for existing is to display a document on the screen. My advice, buy Repligo: it does a lot better job of making PDF files look...

- Dallab DP900 PocketPC Phone (non-VGA) (10:08) - msmobiles discovered a new Pocket PC Phone: The Dallab DP900. If you haven't heard of Dallab before they are a Malaysian company that until now has produced only bluetooth equipped accessories. The Dappab DP900 isn't VGA (VGA isn't supported by the Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition on all Pocket PC Phones) but I am posting info here on non VGA Pocket PCs to help in comparison shopping. The Dallab DP900 is a tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900MHz) 300MHz intel xscale, Pocket PC running Microsoft Pocket PC 2003 Phone Edition. Other features of the Dallab DP900 are 64MB RAM, 64MB ROM, 1100mAh removable battery (that can be switched without the phone losing its connection or power), 240x320 pixel 3" screen, SDIO/SD/MMC card slot, and a VGA digital camera that rotates up to 180 degrees. The Dallab DP900 weighs 5oz, its dimensions aren't known but it look pretty compact considering its small...
